Haven't posted in a while. Been kinda busy. I've been wanting a mid length egg type cruiser for a while now. I was pretty much set on getting a custom from coil but I happen to check out Ryan's PCprogrees blog and my jaw dropped when I saw his vbowls model. I emailed him that day and told him it was the board I never knew I always wanted. I've always liked those pig outlines, but this one looked even better to me. If you see any footage of the board in action it's basically like a hull in forward trim but you can lay into a turns off the tail without the 'wet bar of soap' feel of traditional hulls. At least that what i got out of our conversation. There's a much better description of the board on his blog
I've had a few boards from Ryan in the past and he's definitely among the best when it comes to a custom board experience. I like knowing that he's doing the glassing and fins himself. A really creative an innovative shaper IMO.
So I ordered one without discussing any dims which was kinda nice to let him decide what would be best. So it came out at 8'0 and right when I put it under my arm I knew it was spot on. Even the color I wasn't sure what I wanted so I just asked for something subtle and he suggested a light sage/volan color which came out pretty sweet as well. It's one of those opaque tints that in looks grey or blue or green depending on the light. Kinda trippy. It is super bladey in the nose and tail. The front end is really foiled, most of the foam is aft.
I picked the board up early so my wife can do some art on the bottom. He's going to finish the glassing when she's done. I can wait to see how this turns out

Alien seaweed. Waiting for this board to get finished is pure torture
I'll post some more pics when she's done

Really look forward to hearing your thoughts on it once you surf it a bunch, N. Looks beautiful and I love your wife's artwork! Here's a link to a bit more info on that design...been enjoying following it's progression on Ryan's blog: vBowls link

So after many weeks of the board sitting around our living room the wifey finally finished the alien seaweed art work. Though it probably looks just another doodle, there's a lot of ribbons and stringy things that weave throughout the doodle. I think she made it way more complicated than she intended but I couldn't be happier with the way it came out. Ryan finished glassing it last weekend and everything came out perfect. He's off to Australia and Bali in a few days
First session out was at my regular spot with waves in the HH range and hollow. Probably not the right conditions for the board but I was dying to try it. The board was a little tricky trying to figure it out. It feels slippery like a hull but you can surf it off the tail. The nose is flat and I pearled a handful of drops as the waves were ledging up quick and I wasn't able to get the board to fit the curve more times than not. My last wave I got a nice long speed run and I left the water feeling pretty optimistic of the boards potential. Next session at blackies in knee to thigh high dribble. I must have caught 40+ waves and had an absolute blast. In small waves it has that hull speed and it trims beautifully. Third session in HB shoulder high with the reform to the inside working (at least for me). The board carves like a dream on open face waves. Most waves I would get a carve or two then just weave in to the inside and get another long ride to the beach or pull into a close out barrel which was a little sketchy with the bladey rails always on my mind. As the session went on I started feeling really comfortable on the board and sat inside taking off on some ledgy ones. I wish I could do that first session all over again. I got a lot of people very curious about what I was riding.
Anyway enough babble. Here's the finished product.
I have to take a shot of the rails and rocker as that's the trippiest part of the board
Big thanks to Ryan for an amazing board and to my wife for doing some awesome artwork!
