i wanna try a tunnel fin just for shits and giggles. right now i am feeling allergic to both hardwork and check writing. what i ahve is a bunch of cloth scraps and some resin. heres my thoughts -- put three layers of glass over the glass jar, let harden. break off fiberglass. keep adding layers until its all good. do i put the foil along the inside or outside of the tunnel fin?

First you have to shape yourself a 15-foot kayak to use it on.

When you finish, please post pics and a ride review. I'm very interested in seeing that. Are you also going to have the keel, or only the tunnel?

Hello David, you have to foil the outside of the fin. You can either foil the insideof the fin or leave it flat. Both ways work very well. The difference is that a tunnel which is flat on the inside will direct the water flow slightly more towards the bottom than a double foiled tunnel, so should be set up at a slightly different angle. The angle in relation to the bottom is critical. I will do you a drawing and post it on here to explain.
BTW, I have a 7'5" with a tunnel which goes very well so that 'kayak' talk is all nonsense.

But can you ride it, with your feet straddling the stringer while facing forward? Talk about high performance surfing!

I've got you're instant tunnel fin right here, jerky. Grab a 7" diameter piece of scrap PVC pipe and cut it in half

Is the tunnel fin, or anyone's version of same, really all that different from those curved fins everyone is stoked about?

That's old news Mister, cos that's exactly how I have been making mine (in 4, 6, 8, and 10 inch diameter.

Yes, because the curved fins have toe in, two fin tips, they do not enclose the water flow and they have much less horizontal area. There are some similarities though.

If you would like to know any more about how the angle of the tunnel in relation to the bottom affects the way a board rides then I can explain it for you.

I guess that was a good guess then. Seems like the easiest way to get a perfect 1/2 circle

Yes, except that sometimes those pipes aren't exactly round!

Yes, just as lumber and blanks are often warped, bread stale, cars lemons, film exposed, lightbulbs defective, seams undone, milk expired, faucets and roofs leaky, speakers blown, tires popped, wine corked, pens dry, garage door-opener batteries dead, macaroni too al dente...

But not hulls leaky, sails rotten, compasses maladjusted, anchors too small, skippers seasick, crew drunk, charts out of date or halyards tangled?
