For those of you in North SD, two questions:
Where do you go for really good sushi?
Where's a market to buy a slab of sushi-grade tuna or salmon? I occasionally make my own rolls.
I recently moved to Oceanside from San Clemente and I was spoiled with Taka'o, mmmmm Tataki..

Welcome to Oceanslime! I'm a big sushi fan and I go to Masuo's on Coast Hwy in Solana Beach or Kaisen Sushi on Oceanside Blvd in Oceanside. Kaisen is sushi with a hawaiian twist. I'm not sure if they still do, but they used to have live Island style music on weekend nights.

My teacher told me of a place in Mira Mesa that does sushi and everything with true japanese flavor. It's the only place that does so from his searching. I could ask for you, if you are looking for that flavor.

Oh, also a good place to go on a Friday night...
Sushi Taisho in the commercial center at Carlsbad Village Dr and Coast Hwy. It's in the 2nd story above Coyote Bar & Grill. Sushi is not bad, and the atmosphere is great. Sit outside so you can listen to the live band playing right below you outside of Coyote.

Second Kaisen best sushi in north county for the price Live music fridays and wensdays I believe for sure on friday's and it's good music. If you wanna spend a few bucks go to encinitas and on the corner of encintas boulevard and vulcan (up above by the hotel) is Tomiku. Very good sushi but expensive. NOBU in Salona beach is good as well. Matsua has great atmosphere but I have never been that impressed with their fish. Seaside market in Cardiff is the only place I trust in north county to buy sushi grade fish (I do this often) I work in La Jolla and buy from El Pescador fish market and whole foods for sushi grade fish.

Check out the Hon Sushi on PCH (Oceanside) not far from SurfRide (on the same side of the road). The best sushi hands down in these parts. Don't go to Mikko in Carlsbad. Last time I went there their rolls shrunk from 6 to 4 pieces, not that good either...

you should try finky finkelsteins in oceanside. real tasty kosher sushi, not too fresh actually but it's served up with real religious fervor! the egg-creams rock, and if you got an extra $15.00, you can score a pretty hot but sloppy whore in the parking lot or the men's room!

Definitely not Mikko... any place that advertises 50% off every day of the year can't be too good.
A good fish market = Fish House Veracruz on Carlsbad Village Drive. A good restaurant that also sells fresh fish.

Ahhh, not a sushi, but a japanese restaurant. Called "Umenoya". It's not cheap, but it's appearently really good (but this is from someone who is Japanese, so your taste may be different than his).

Dude, I hear you!! I grew up in and still work in San Clemente. I still hit up Taka'o every couple of weeks or so. Can you imagine the Tataki sauce on a fish taco. WOW.
Anyway, I live in Solana Beach. There is a really good place right next to Pizza Port on 101 called Station Sushi. Just north of Lomas Santa Fe. The best sashimi I've ever had. I think they beat Taka'o in a roll to roll competition, but the Tataki puts Taka'o over the top.
Station has the "surfer" vibe with lots of beach paintings and half of the line up you just saw in the water behind the counter making your roll.
Give them a try, you'll like it.
Dammit, I want Tataki now

Station is a great spot with great prices. I remeber getting sick Fresh Big Eye Tuna sashimi once there, one of the best peices of fish I have ever eaten.

The new Leucadia Sushi Bar (next to Longboard Grotto) is pretty cool. I wouldn't call it the best sushi but it has a conveyor belt bringing you color coded price plates. Nothing over $3.50!

Conveyor belts ruined Sushi.
My first conveyor belt type sushi experience was in Vancouver. Instead of a belt it was a river with boats of sushi on it. It was a big thing there. Anyways, I remember being super paranoid about how long the boat had been traveling around. I found myself thinking about that lone boat from lunch, 8 hours earlier, that never got picked. So everyone at the place would watch the guy setting the new rolls to sail..."eel roll, green boat. eel roll, grean boat is mine". I was vibing everyone up stream. Of course, everytime I would pick up a boat, I would look downstream at the disappointed faces. It wasn't a relaxing dinner.

dunno about north county but there's a new place, zushi, up here at the harbor that is really really good. we used to be gen kai die hards but this place has it beat. one side of it is a teppan house and the other is the sushi bar. haven't tried the teppan yet but the sushi is some of the freshest i've had around here. prices are good and it's relatively uncrowded when we go which is usually early. although the bar starts jumping on the weekends.

I've been to Leucadi sushi, and thought it was pretty good. I've also had sushi at Katsu (San Marcos restaraunt ow), and they are good as well. However, I've recently found an inexpensive place that I like for a quick take-out roll or three, called Sushi n' Joy. It is near the Trader Joe's off the 78.
So far, I've tried the California rolls, Spicy Tuna rolls and spicy albacore rolls. So far I like em' all...

Pelly's fish market in Carlsbad sells some really good fresh fish. They also make a killer fish sandwich. Cool dudes run the place too.

I'm not a big sushi expert, but try the sun sai place across of street from car country carlsbad car village. Cheap if you don't want to spend a whole lot, best part is the salad.

That was pretty funny,
But in all honesty.
The marine room may cook you up a week old hunk of shitty fish and pour some sauce on it and charge you 30 bucks. They can't do that if you buy it raw and you know how to recognize crap raw fish. I send ***** back at sushi places all the time and that way they never give me crap. All raw fish ain't the same you gotta know the cut's the dye's they use and recognize crap. On a seperate note never go out for sushi or seafood on a sunday nite. They are serving you ***** they bought on saturday morning cause that is the last chance they had to buy fresh *****.

Best thing about Kaisen is when they get fresh uni and I mean fresh. They buy it off the divers a whole urchin runs about 10 bucks and is served over ice. So good and you will be standing at attention for a good 24 hours your spouse date or any cheap slut in town will love you long time.

Anybody ever eat at the sushi place on carlsbad village drive just west of the 5 (in that albertsons. gas station parking lot?) I always end up by that place and never know if it's worth trying.
I like sushi, but I hate how expensive it is. Makes me really wary about trying new places, cause you may end up paying alot for something you don't like (unlike mexican food)

Uni (sea urchin) is supposed to be an aphrodesiac SP? So are oysters, eaten a ton of oysters never felt anything. When I eat I ton of uni I feel something maybe just mental but my wife doesn't seem to mind when I order it. And if you want cheap sushi go to Kaisen cheapest good sushi I have found. That leucadia belt spot is cheap but I wasn't impressed with their fish and I too get kinda creeped by the whole belt deal. I live above that other sushi spot mentioned it's alright. Really cheap sushi go for the spot on the corner of 101 and E street can't remeber the name but it's dirt cheap, don't blame me if your pissing out your ass the next day though. Cheap sushi is cheap for a reason kinda like buying cheap bait.

Not worth it. I've eaten there many times, but I lived a short walk from that place and I still hadn't found any of the other sushi places mentioned in this thread.

a few simple steps to follow when it comes to good sushi.
first: look at the menu and check the prices.3-3.50 for nigiri sushi is fair and up to 5.00 for premium items.
second:check out the enviroment in the bar area does it look clean?
are the chefs japanese or korean? never.. i repeat never! sit down at a sushi bar with a mix of unskilled untrained looking staff.
third: look at the fish and don't be afraid to ask questions.when was the fish deliverd? tues-friday is best for fresh fish.
raw tuna "maguro" should be deep red with a non oily look to it.it should be firm and free of a blood line around inside edge never pink (frozen defrosted).
yellow tail "hamachi" should be a pale white not a brownish color a sure sign it is a couple days old.
"uni" should be firm with a deep orange hue about it and should never be eatin when it is mushy and runny looking.
i suggest ordering "kampachi" a firm yellow tail(japanese) with a impressive rich taste not fishy at all.
also "engawa"the outer edge of the hirami "halibit" is a japanese secret delicasy make sure they hit it with ponzu sauce and daikon.
"honmaguro" is the best tuna you will ever taste.try o-toro or chu-toro , it is super rich in flaver considered the best of the best!
follow simple step's to insure you are getting quality fish that is fresh and healthy. if you are unfortunite and spare cost for quality you will pay dearly, getting sick from bad fish will put you in a lot of pain....
for every shitty sushi bar there is a good one so try a different spot now and then.kind of like surfing you can surf rincon and come off completely satisfied or you can surf south bay slop, the choice is your's. -chriso
