"A species of kingfisher, the blue-winged kookaburra delivers a shrieking cackle reminiscent of manic laughter; two types of kookaburras inhabit Australia."

That's a great shot of the kookaburra ac!
I've been trying to get a shot of the local Belted Kingfisher for over a year now but the thing doesn't stay put for very long.
Might be time for a trip down under!

Is it me, or does that Kookaburra have a huge head?
I'll bet it cries itself to sleep on its huge pillow.

First of all it's not a huge head.. it's a huge noggin!

You gone and made me go and do it Keenfish. Taken Jan 2006, A Belted Kingfisher. Stunning bird, bad bad picture... Looks like a statue, eh? I can't wait until you get some shots of one. Your photos are topnotch.

After it rains, I see a belted kingfisher in the flood channel at the Sorento Mesa exit off of 5. I carry my camera, but there's no where to park.

Here are some more photos.....
If you have ever been to OZ especially in the summer time you would have no doubt have seen these 2 types of birds around the place.
The first photo is of the rainbow lorikeet which lives mostly in NSW & Queensland.
The second photo is the Cockatoo. They can be found all over Australia.
Check them out

Good job knice.. I'm green with envy! Any photo of a Belted Kingfisher is a GOOD photo in my book. Those birds are darn hard to capture and you did it. Stoked!! I can't wait to get one myself.
Here's a couple photos of common birds from the backyard last weekend.
Common French Fry Bird
This one is full frame shot with the 300 f/4 plus 1.4X converter and 580EX at -2/3 flash comp.
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
These were shot with the 500 f/4 plus 1.4X converter (handheld) and slightly cropped.

Keep those cards and letters coming...

There is one that often hangs out on the overhead wire right where the HB Wetlands bike trail intersects with the Santa Ana River bike trail, just before that trail goes under PCH.
I enjoy this thread. Keep it going.
EDIT---There is also a great blue heron nest in a real tall palm tree right by that spot. I've never seen them nest in a palm before.

Thanks for the tip ringer. I'm definately going to check that out!
Is that the bike path that cuts in front of the sewage plant (Talbert Marsh) and connects at the Santa Ana River trail?
I've never seen a nest in a Palm either. I'm going to check that this weekend for sure.

Yup! I heard them the other day whilst jogging past the cage.
I think it will be the biggest year yet for them. Two years ago the ground squirrels decimated about 100 nests, but now they have barriers in place and squirrel eraditication measures. (Sorry, Rocky.) Last year the least terns were so prevalent that they moved the temporary wooden barriers seaward because the birds were nesting outside of the enclosure.
Sometimes in late May when they flock there you can look in one glance at 5% of the world's population of the species.
Nice shot.

The hummingbirds have been pretty active in my backyard today. Turns out, a fledgling was just learning to fly and might've fallen out of the nest as it was just sort of sitting on the bushes allowing us to get really close to it. Of course, it was probably scared to death but it wasn't really doing much. We didn't know if he was injured or what so we mixed up a little bit of nectar and fed it to him through a straw. That must've been like the adrenaline shot to Uma in Pulp Fiction because a few minutes later, this little guy starts chirping like crazy. Mom and Pop Hummer must've heard their little one's cries as they showed up and a Hummingbird family reunion ensued.
Sensing a Kodak Moment, I grabbed the camera and fired off a few shots with the 300 2.8 and also tried a few with the fisheye. The little guy was pretty brave as he let me setup the tripod with the lens about 4-5" away from him.

Great captures SFB!
And really nice photos as well. The first one is exceptional but they are all cool. Hope the little guy was able to fly!
Did you get a new toy (300 f/2.8)?
I just discovered a hummer nest today in the same tree out front where they always set up but this time it is way up high so I probably won't be able to get any shots. Still stoked to find the nest and be able to watch as things develop.
The neighborhood Kestrels are getting very active. Shot a bunch last weekend but due to some computer problems this is the only one I have to share for now.

A snip from Monty Python's THE HOLY GRAIL... Behold the cave of Caerbannog!
TIM: Follow. But! Follow only if ye be men of valor, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived! Bones of full fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.
ARTHUR: Where?
TIM: There!
ARTHUR: What, behind the rabbit?
TIM: It is the rabbit!
ARTHUR: You got us all worked up!
TIM: Well, that's no ordinary rabbit. That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on.
ROBIN: You tit! I soiled my armor I was so scared!
TIM: Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide; it's a killer!
GALAHAD: Get stuffed!
TIM: He'll do you up a treat mate!
GALAHAD: Oh, yeah?
TIM: I'm warning you!
ROBIN: What's he do, nibble your bum?
TIM: He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!
ARTHUR: Go on, Bors. Chop his head off!
BORS: Right! Silly little bleeder. One rabbit stew comin' right up!
[ Rabbit flies at Bors’s throat and savages him to death ]
TIM: I warned you, but did you listen to me? Oh, no, you knew it all, didn't you? Oh, it's just a harmless little bunny, isn't it? Well, it's always the same. I always tell them--
ARTHUR: Oh, shut up!

PS - ThaDood... nice photos. Diggin' the mississippi kites!
