Inthe past i have ordered boards fron scott raymond henry in encinitas. I have lost touch with him after buying off the rack boards for the last few years. I can't seem to find a good oldschool fish in the local long island shops, anybody reccomend a good local shaper or cali shaper who will ship to NY ?

Long Beach Surf Shop on Park ave. carries Chris Birch fishes. The boards look really nice from what I've seen, and I see a lot of guys out here (LI) riding them. They're old school with a more modern outline. In Cali, Manny of Mandala custom shapes makes an amazing fish. He ships to NY, and is a really nice person to deal with. You just might have to wait a bit, but it's worth it. Good Luck on your quest.

I've got two Chris Birch shapes. Great boards and a lot of fun. I have a 5'8" fish and a 5'10" double wing round tail twin fin. I highly recommend his shapes.
-------------------- While I cannot propose a solution, I can certainly admire the problem.

No, but I do have a sense of humor, and I do appreciate the use of proper grammar. Plus, I've owned a fish and lived on Long Island, and I sincerely hope that I never have to do either again.

-What kind of fish were you riding Craig? Just curious...... because I have seen some lousy surfing on some lousy fish over the last few yrs.I have also seen some excellent surfing recently on very small fish( 5ft). To say fish suck is obviously a stupid statement. Dubstar--How is your order coming? I heard Lis is shaping in SD for a while.

I didn't say fish suck. I said that I hope to never own one again. Just like I hope to never own a longboard again. It's simply a matter of personal preference. I don't like the way fish feel underfoot, and for the waves I ride, I don't find any advantage to them that is distinctly different from riding wider, thicker thrusters.
I'm sure that I could spend lots of time and money investing in fishes to try to find the one that's "right" for me, but I'd rather invest in the boards that I prefer.
I've ridden all different kinds of boards, and fish were my least favorite of all of them. I personally think that the whole fish renaissance is more hype than substance. They work for some people, and for some people they don't. Whatever floats your boat.

First, i think this guy on the video is surfing a fish to big and thick for him.
Second, i think the video isn't a good example. If i see the video before buying a fish to make the decision... i would buy another thruster, for sure.
He can't bury a rail, that i think it's the funniest thing on a fish and not just ride flat on the wave.

Exactly.
Here's a better example. Be patient and watch it till the end (great read too)...

The merrick fish is good and thick depending on your height and weight, ride it real small if you are a good surfer.

dhsp, it has nothing to do with surfing like the Malloys, who, by the way, no matter what their videos (and Taylor Steel's) tell us, aren't the best surfers in the world.
For me it has to do with a little (light) guy surfing a big (too much foam) fish, riding it all over the water, not being able to bury a rail, just floating over the wave like on a compact noserider.
Don't take me wrong, if this guy enjoys that, is OK to me.
BUT the thing is that i guess most of the people who says " a fish doesn't hold on bottom turns", "a fish is just for knee high waves", "a fish can't hold a line", and all this kind of things is because they're riding the wrong fish.
By the way, i don't surf like the Malloys, i'm big, fat, out of shape, 11+ hours a day in an office... but i enjoy my time in the water even on small waves with on shore winds...

Maybe the fish isn't big, and, at this time, my mouth is bigger , but the guy on the video (is that you?) didn't seemed to me like riding a fish, maybe he comes from a thruster and still has "thruster manners", maybe he isn't used to thicker rails, maybe it's the wave, but i think he's trying to generate speed like on a thruster and he's riding with the board flat to water untill he makes a move (ie: cut back).
I'm 6'0'' and 195lbs and i ride 5'10x20.5''x2.625'', but i always rode bigger boards (lot of longboarding also).
The thing is why the hell someone wants to live in Long Island???
My apologies if the guy riding the fish is you and you felt as i was so critic, it wasn't my intention.
By the way, i'm sure you have better waves on the east coast!

I think right now the best fish being sold off the rack are the Kane Gardens at Main Beach in Wainscott. Just my opinion.

Peten...
Check out
www.freespiritsurfboards.com (I think that is the link, if not it is linked to my website)
Despite the fact that his name is nowhere to be found on the site, these are Scotts boards. He has someone else doing the legwork.
For his retro boards he is using the freespirit logo, a logo that a freinds mom made for him in the seventies.
You can order his boards online.

NY_Surfer, afford some dollars and come to live to Galicia... Here you'll find plenty of good empty beach breaks, the food is really good, the wine is better, the chicks are great, live is cheap, no one will bother you because most of the people doesn't speak english. Bring your fish with you because here you won't find a good fish (board).
I was just kidding about wanting to live in Long Island because i figured any surfer would want to go to the West coast, i've never been there. In fact my mother lived some years in Baltimore but i never felt so attracted to go to the US East cost to check the waves.
I'm sure if you want to live there you must have some kind of motivation (waves, job, a girl).
Buy a fish, go to live to Long Island if that's what you want to do. If finally you don't like your decision, you can sell your fish, move back to another place or do both things.
So go ahead!
Coque.
