~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Interscholastic Surfing Federation (ISF) ended its 17th season May 6, 7, & 8, 2006 with the California High School Surfing State Championships. The 3-day event was held at Oceanside Harbor’s South Jetty where students from 41 high schools were greeted with the first south swell of the season. Sets ranged from 6 to 8 feet on Saturday, 5 to 7 feet on Sunday and 4 to 6 feet on Monday.
13 coastal teams and 9 inland teams competed in a team vs team format on Saturday and Sunday until champions were named in each of five divisions. Carlsbad High School was crowned overall State Champion in the Coastal Division and Los Alamitos High School in the Inland Division.
After two days of team competition the event switched gears and began a one-day individual contest to name the top high school surfers in the state. Each surfer in this event must be a member of his or her school surf team and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
As 248 students, representing 41 high schools from throughout the state, battled against each other in one of five divisions, Men’s Shortboard and Longboard, Women’s Shortboard and Longboard and Bodyboard, families and friends on the beach had a great time being entertained my some of the best high school surfers in the state. Scotts Valley High School, from Santa Cruz County, fired up the grill and surprised everyone when they provided breakfast burritos, hamburgers and hotdogs to everyone on the beach that was hungry. What a treat! After more than 10 hours of duel heats, champion individuals were named and trophies awarded.
ISF currently has 3 separate sections conducting school surf competitions in California. They are; San Diego/Orange Section, Channel Section and Santa Cruz Section. In addition to it’s own teams, ISF invites all other surf teams to enter it’s State Champs. By the time the individual competition came down to the final heats, it wasn’t surprising that the top ranked students from each section of the organization were still in the battle to win. When trophies were handed out and leis adorned the winners, five students began their journeys home as State Champions. Tommy Pearson from Rancho Buena Vista was named Champion in Men’s Shortboard, Christian Clark from La Costa Canyon in Men’s Longboard, Sophia Sarlo from Malibu in Women’s Shortboard, Kaitlin, Maguire from Torrey Pines in Women’s Longboard and Collin Chambers from Oceanside in Bodyboard.
The ISF has been sponsored this season by Transworld Surf, Santa Cruz Sheriffs Activity League, Gatekeeper Locking Racks and Shark Bait Wax. The Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club, San Diego Woody Club and La Jolla Shores Surfing Club have all supported ISF with generous donations to help the program continue its work in support of student surfers.
