25 dead in Bali after consuming methanol-tainted booze Health News
Australia's Surfing Life reports 25 dead in Bali from local booze
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 June, 2009 : - - At least 25 people have died in Bali in the past week from a batch of the popular local booze arak, which was found to be contaminated with methanol. Arak, made from fermented rice, palm sap, and corn, is a traditional drink for many Balinese and is often used in religious ceremonies. Since imported alcohol has a 500% tax markup, arak is an ever cheaper than usual alternative for locals and tourists keen to get on it.
Of the 25 deaths four were tourists including an English couple, a Dutchman and a well-known US artist. Dozens more are recovering after being seriously poisoned, and those in Sanglah District Hospital are being further pained by having to share ward-space with convicted bogan drug smuggler Schapelle Corby, who is apparently depressed.
Local officials are warning travellers to steer clear of the arak attacks, and instead get to work on healthier options like jam jars, jungle juice, fish bowls and those plastic yard glasses they give you at the Bounty.*
*Local official Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya may actually have said "For the time being I would say only consume alcohol that has been guaranteed by the Government.”

This was covered in another thread. She was not well known actually, it just makes good copy. Very, very sad in any event.

It is always sad when tourists are dragged into ideological disputes! But more tragic is the devastation yet another senseless attack on tourists will have on the great and friendly locals who depend on the tourist dollar to keep afloat. Never relent, stay true and keep the dream alive...in short don't cancel your indo trip for these few petty asswanks!

Someone probably wasn't distilling their hooch at the right temp or not throwing away the first stuff that came out of the still. Sad news.

Highly unlikely that this was a terrorist attack. The primary consumers of local hooch are the Balinese themselves, as well as other Indonesians.
Although, a hard line Islamic militant might realize that the pious of their faith will not be affected, whereas infidels of the Western and Hindu varieties as well as apostate Muslims will be.
Highly unlikely in any event.
Much more likely greed, lack of government regulatory enforcement, insufficient chemical knowledge and lack of scruples, or some combination of the above, were the culprit.
