2009 Anything But 3 East Saturday September 26th (rain/no wave date Sept 27th) Harvey Cedars, NJ (LBI) Location - Hudson St.
The event all you right coasters have been waiting for. The second annual AB3E. Last years event was a huge success with local pro and backyard shapers and several visiting shapers from San Diego County CA.
This year we are holding the event in the fall, which is a great time of year to visit NJ. The water is warm, (typically board shorts or spring suit), the leaves are starting to turn colors, the summer crowds and lifeguards are gone, and the tropical swells are pumping.
This is a great event for surfers and surfboard shapers alike. A great day to demo many different designs and learn more about the craft of hand shaping surfboards. Bring out your favorite boards, show them off, and let others take them for a ride. It's all about trying different shapes and talking about board design.
Updates and more info can be found on the official blog http://anythingbut3east.blogspot.com/
Pictures of last years event can be seen HERE

Stoked your putting this on again
Pretty sure thats me in the center of first photo wearing a fullsuit.
Much better to have it in warm water, last year it was 2 days after I got back from trunking it in Aust & Mentawis, hard to adjust to all that rubber and diff boards at the same time.
Roger, location is across Blvd fro about the biggest carpark on the island, and if that doesn't work, try Cape May Ave-park in front of fishing club (fark those guys) and walk the couple of blocks up the beach.

Good news for those traveling to attended the AB3E. The event coincides with the NY Surf Film Festival so you can visit the AB3 all morning and catch surf flicks all evening!

So, how do we get this thread to be designated a "sticky topic"? TFAD?

Thanks for "sticking" this thread!
FWIW, I checked out the twin-keel and green convertible that rdj shaped and those two boards alone will be worth attending the event. Outstanding work.

I missed it last year and could not turn out for the Coil ride gathering a couple months back, so I'm going to make it to this one.
If anyone needs to haul some event gear to / from the area, I've got a full size pickup truck that we can use. Post or send me a PM if interested.

Damn Jimmy, that sucks, it was good meeting you last year.
Do you know offhand if DJ (DK) or Ian (Zamora) will be making it (I ask you since you guys traveled here together last year)?

I've heard from Matt Campbell (Resin-X). He will be attending. Marlin Bacon was planning to come, but I haven't heard a definite yes from him. I think we will get more east coasters this year to pick up some of the slack.

Marlin told me he was gonna try and go. I'd come but finances just do not allow it for me right now. Things are tough..and money is tight. Hope you guys have a great event and I hope to be there for the next one.

So whats everyone gonna bring? Heres what I have to choose from, let me know if anyone wants to ride something and I'll make sure it gets thrown in the car next weekend.
1. 5'8 Quiet Flight Double Bump 80's Twin 2. 5'8 Basic Element Quad Fish (FS by the way) 3. 5'8 Zamora 5 fin fish design 4. 5'8 KG Twin Keel 5. 5'11 Mandala RPQ 6. 6'0 Campbell Bros. Bonzer Shortboard (very typical shortboard dims) 7. 6'1 Point Concept Winged Rounded Pin 2+1 (Brothers new board, good luck getting him to share) 8. 6'4 Point Concept Flextail Hull 9. 6'4 Seagull Single Fin 10. 6'4 Petrillo Single Fin Chop Job (dads old board) 11. 6'8 G&S Stinger Single Fin
Thats about it that will fit in my car, probably don't want to bring either of the logs, but may throw em on the roof just for the hell of it. Going to try and fit as many of those boards in the car as possible. Peace, Kyle

Some info for those traveling to NJ:
Well fall seems to have come early this year with milder than usual temperatures.
Current water temps are teetering around 68 - 70 degrees. Boardshortable for the thicker skinned, but I suggest a spring suit for comfort while getting in and out of the water. Air temps will be in the high 50's to low 60's Saturday morning, so if you plan to show up early a 3/2 might not even be a bad idea.
Sunrise 6:48am Low tide 7:30am High tide 2:00pm
We'll be getting there around 7am to start setting up.
Remember there is NO PARKING on Hudson Ave. You can park on the other side streets, but we recommend parking in the lot behind the water tower on the other side of Long Beach Blvd. I also recommend not parking in front of the wooden fence along Long Beach Blvd. You may see other cars parked there, but Harvey Cedars police have been known to ticket that spot. The big lot under the water tower, by the park is your best bet. There are public bathrooms there as well.
See you all there!

At this point wave forecast looks somewhat grim although there is a slight chance of a shot of NE windswell. Weather looks good for Saturday so there's no reason to change it. We basically left Sunday an option only if Saturday was a complete wash.
Pray for surf!

I don't think the benefit of moving it to Sunday out-weighs the potential loss. We reserved Sunday as a rain/no wave day. Saturday will be dry and there will be waves, just not good ones. If we move it to Sunday we risk losing several shapers and many attendees who have planned on Saturday. It would only be worth it if Saturday was a complete wash. Lesson learned from the NY Fish Fry. The turn out was so much less than expected due to a last minute date change. When I got to Long Beach there were about 30 or so boards and maybe 25 surfers. I really don't want that to happen to the AB3E.

I agree, just keep it Saturday. Yea we want good waves, but thats not the only thing AB3 is about. Rick any chance you could bring down your Zamora HP Fish? I'm still waiting on mine and really want to give one a go. Peace, Kyle

I think you are making a good call on this. I'll update the wave prediction in a little bit, but I think the potential weather issues for Sunday AM outweigh the wind direction issues we will have on Sat.

Here is the prediction (Brent has some stuff going on, so he might not get to post it in time):
Friday 25 Sept 2009
Report: Northeast winds are pushing up some small NE windswell. Short period and kinda sloppy, but perhaps sheltered breaks may hold a ridable wave.
Prediction: Increasing NE winds overnight may push up a little more size for Satuday, with winds looking to be moderate NE to ESE on Saturday.
Extended Forecast: Frontal passage overnight Sat-Sunday will yield inscreased SE-ESE winds (and windswell) followed by offshore winds (and a cleanup) post-passage. Monitor sources of local weather for up to date info on this windshift; at the moment it is looking like early/mid morning on Sunday.
NOTE: Check out the Surf News section for information about the Anything But Three East surfboard event in LBI this weekend. If you are wondering why they are sticking with the Saturday schedule, the purpose of this event is to meet shapers, reps, and board owners in order to talk shop and borrow boards for a few waves if conditions allow. Unfortunately, with the current prediction calling for rain for the first half (or more?) of Sunday, this could really interfere with the interaction portion of the event.
