thinking about driving to cabo spring break(late march early april)..i am aware of the new us travel warning but think that bad situations are easily avoided like driving through the border a little after dawn. Has anyone done it recently? any advice will help. i am 18 and cant rent a car so i need my truck down their to access certain spots in the area.

I went to Abreojos a few years ago with a some friends and had fun camping, surfing (main point and 3 poles), and fishing from the beach (would catch yellowfin croaker on every cast...missed the halibut by about a month). Go for it but take the following precautions. It is best to caravan with at least one other vehicle and use remote radios to communicate. Take some extra car parts and a spare gas can and gas up at every station on the trip. Best to blow through the border very early in the morning and don't stop till you get to El Rosario. Fuel up there then blow through the desert. Don't drive at night and watch for livestock on the road at any time. Not sure how the conditions are now (heard there were road washouts around a month ago). If good, go for it and you will have fun!

Drove down from San Diego to Cabo (and everywhere else along the way), just this past summer for a month. We were lucky, didn't get pulled over, extorted or into any trouble.
I urge you to do your homework, read the news down there, and make sure you know where to camp and where not to camp.
With the economic downturn, and the lack of american tourists, money is running thin through all the towns and cities. I would just remain very aware of your surroundings and don't be dumb. Have a low pro car, so you dont stick out as a young american with money.
Otherwise Baja is as beautiful and forgiving as it ever was (if you can call it forgiving). Make sure you know a lot about your truck/car and ready for the 20+ hr haul.
