"There's a definite demand for custom wetsuits for team riders of companies who don't sell wetsuits. These companies, such as Volcom, RVCA, Nike 6.0, Oakely, Lost, etc., contact us to make suits for their team riders. We've been able to service their needs by designing suits using the same material as the Buell label, customizing the suits to reflect the company's own style or image."
I find it kinda funny how a lot of the same people who bitch about the corporatization of surfing by companies like Nike also happen to be the biggest pro hos who love following the CT. If you have a problem with surfing selling out don't just point yourself to the obvious culprit in Nike. Point your finger at Quiksilver, Billabong, Hurley, etc. Point your finger at Slater, AI (RIP), Mick, Jordy, Dane, etc. All of the surfers on the CT represent this. They're being paid to wear and endorse merchandise and help sell surfing to the masses. They don't care about crowded line-ups. In fact they want crowded line-ups and wave pools in every town. The more the merrier when it comes to quarterly reports. I know Nike entering the mix just kinda enhances this reality but if you really want to stop supporting the selling out of surfing to corporate interests then stop supporting pro surfing and the publications that cover pro surfing and sell ad space to these companies including Surfer mag and this website.
I know for a fact that Nike managed to enter the skateboarding industry and did it in a more than credible manner with the Nike SB line. They recruited a team of legit riders and actually put out a limited and good quality line of apparel and shoes distributing them in limited quantities only to exclusive core retailers. Snowboarding as well. A good friend of mine who worked for various well known and respected companies was hired to help spearhead their snowboard line with a team of people who had a long history working in the snowboarding industry. It's not like they just had a bunch of guys in suits in an office building start designing snowboard boots. I don't see why they can't do the same with surfing. And at the very least have no less of an impact on the industry than the existing corporate behemoths like Quik, Billabong and Hurley.
I love the idea of supporting the little guy and have been looking towards Buell for my next wetsuit like many on the erBB. But if it turns out that Nike makes a good product that's reviewed well and it happens to fit me better than I may actually consider it. But if their wetsuits end up being the wetsuit equivalent of surftech popouts forget it. I'll let the product do the talking.
Disclaimer: I do feel a lot different about companies like Target getting in on it. I don't think a company like target has any interest in entering the surf world in any credible manner and has little if anything to offer.

Quote: Buell is making the Nike suits so its a conundrum
I want a Hypercolor wetsuit. 20W wants Dickies
As far as I know Buell makes branded wetsuits for various teams that don't produce wetsuits. That's just a matter of labeling. But that's done in small quantities as a custom order. I can see them producing wetsuits for the Nike 6.0 team. But if Nike produces a nike branded wetsuit to hit the retail market will they simply be Buell's branded with a swoosh? Or will they develop their own line? Maybe contract Buell to design them and produce them in their own factories?
I wonder if Buell will make me an Astroglide branded wetsuit?

That would suck. I like to piss in my wetsuit when I'm still in the parking lot. Everyone would see the crotch and the inside of my left leg turn neon orange.

Nike is whack.. sweatshop a$$ company.. they tried to penetrate skating a few times before it actually worked. Too bad it finally did. Anyone who rides for em is an ignorant sellout. Kolohe, Michel, Dusty, Carissa, PRod, and all you other kooks, especially crooked arm.

That kind of sucks downing a guy trying to do his own thing after putting in time at a company. From what I understand, the quality is there.
On another note, the proho (more like good surfing watching ho, at least for me) = supporting the brobrah industry is not always the case.
I would be willing to bet $ that the real people supporting much of the brobrah CLOTHING industry are landlocked and only know Slater at best and have never seen a contest. I'm also willing to bet that a lot of pro-hos on here don't own many "surf brand" articles of clothing. Go to most Socal parking lots and you'll see few "surf brands" being worn. Especially by the more experienced crew. And if even if they did, they probably got it kicked down.
Not to be "anti" establishment or cool or anything, but simply because it's 100% unnecessary for surfing. And because surfers are the cheapest motherf**kers on the planet.

Where do you think all the big surf industry companies make their products? A friend of mine who works for one of the bigger ones is visiting their denim factory in Guatemala right now. Don't fool yourself into thinking they're any better than Nike.

ur right about that. those big surf companies all suck too and it would be interesting to see the working conditions at their shops exposed. . but Nike has been doing it forever and continues to be a repeat offender.
Anyway, we never supported a company that WHACK, even before the sweatshops were exposed. too mainstream, sporty, etc.. whatever. When i was coming up the donkeys all wore Nike. As well as all the jocks & gangster kids that would hate on skaters. The jocks would call us skater fags and the gangsters would always try to steal our hats when we would skate downtown. ahhh, those were the days.. anyway, after many beat-downs for both sides, we all grew up and moved on, the jocks went to college, the gangsters found guns to play with, & we moved to skateboard paradises. Then something very weird happened...
... a little over 10 years ago, skating became cool, surfing was cool. the jocks were so very lost and left out so they started wearing skate and surf gear. Independent trucks T-shirts, skate shoes, Quiksilver boardies, Element(PS sellout), Alien Workshop even... Then, one day, a Nike exec. freaked out when he saw a juicehead in a too tight DC shoes shirt, oversized jeans, Osiris D3's, and a puka shell necklace.. He went back to NIke and worked even harder on penetrating the seemingly impenetrable, and after trying for years they finally got it up, and got it in, any hole they could find. Nike SB, still bitches.. i don't care about the team, how good anyone is at something means nothing.. i'd rather get some shoes that were made with fair working conditions.
the 6.0"er?
what does 6.0 stand for? what do they even make? they're gonna make boards soon or what? surf 6.0? is it the combined weight in ounces of their riders' brains, dignity, self-worth, and balls? or 6.0 times more contests, more heads crowding, and hype? whatever.. jus sayin. NIke's fake, support the real.
never a bad day. .
