SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) – A woman has been mauled to death by a pack of four pit bulls in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, authorities said on Monday.
Margaret Salcedo, 48, was walking alone when the dogs, which had escaped from a fenced yard at a private home, attacked her at an intersection on Sunday afternoon, Truth or Consequences Police Chief Patrick Gallagher said.
A passerby in a car opened his door to intervene, but he stayed in the vehicle when a dog charged him, police said.
"The officer arrived on the scene in less than three minutes, but it must have felt like an eternity to the poor woman being attacked," Gallagher told Reuters.
One of the dogs charged the officer, who shot and injured the animal, police said. All four dogs ran off, and the officer administered first aid to the wounded woman.
Salcedo was bitten on all her extremities and lost a lot of blood, Gallagher said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died within hours, he said.
The dogs were later located, and the animal that had been shot was dead from its injuries.
The other three dogs were taken to an animal shelter, but authorities said they will not make a determination on whether to destroy them until the conclusion of their investigation.
The dogs belonged to a couple named John and Maria Hardiman, who were not present during the attack, police said.
New Mexico State Police officials were conferring with the local District Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
Truth or Consequences is about 150 miles south of Albuquerque, and the town named after a television game show in 1950 is popular for its hot springs.

What other breeds have been known to do this when "raised/neglected"?

PRetty much all breeds.
Back in the 80s, it was Chows and German Shepherds.
In the 90s, Dobermans and Rottweilers.
poop, even Akitas and Bullmastiffs got a bad rap.
Lately it's Pit Bulls (and anything that even resembles them).

How could there not be?
"if" is a funny word.

The dogs got out. How is that the owners' fault? Unless the dogs were constantly getting out and going on the prowl and the owners did nothing then this is an unfortunate accident.
Any dog when they get in a pack mentality can be dangerous. Imagine a pack of 6 Bichons attacking you, they may not have the strength of pit bulls but 6 sets of teeth and claws would still suck

No idea how they do things in Truth or Consequences, NM - but here in California it would be the owner's fault 100%. You have a responsibility to keep your dogs contained. So, unless there is evidence showing that someone cut the dogs loose - then by all means it's negligence on the owner. Accident, maybe. Unfortunate, for sure. But that just because it's an accident doesn't absolve them of any liability. It could be easily argued that any reasonable person would see that their dogs have the potential to be dangerous and certain steps should have been taken to contain them. Accidentally leaving the kennel open = negligence. Some gangbangers breaking into their home trying to steal the dogs and the dogs getting away = Owner's are ok.
Who knows? I certainly don't. I kind of stopped reading when it said "Truth or Consequences, NM" (it IS a stupid ***** name for a town) and got the rest of the info from this thread.
My neighbor when I was growing up bred Rottweilers and Dobermans as guard dogs and sold them to various businesses, etc. These things were hulking monsters that went ballistic whenever he went back to feed them. One time, my little sister was in the backyard playing and the guy calls my dad and says that the dog was loose and it would probably try and get in our back yard (our dogs loved chasing back and forth with their dogs behind through the fences). My mom flips out and runs in the backyard and my sister (5 years old? Something like that) is putting flowers in the Rottweiler's ear. She did it all the time with our dogs, and this man killing beast somehow managed to get out (turned out that the dog was trying to dig under the fence in the back and couldn't get under it - but the dirt that it kicked up created a big enough pile that allowed it to jump up just high enough that it could climb its way over the back fence). Anyway, the guy came over, grabbed the dog, put it back in the kennel and apologized to my parents. He told us that we were lucky because that particular one was still young and wasn't "trained." (which was one of the reasons it was trying to get out in the first place) He had contractors out there putting up new fencing the next day.
That was back in the 80s when no one knew what a lawsuit was.

You drive by and the woman is being attacked. You get out and the dog comes after you.
Do you get back in the care, close the door and watch?
If I did that and the woman died it would eat me for life.
But you never know until the choice has to be made.
I have this hero fantasy so I would proably do it for the ego boost.
I want the news girl to say, "People are calling you a hero."
And then I will say,"Yeah, the pretty much sums it up. How about a kiss for the hero?" Then I would try to kiss the cute news girl. If I'm a hero isn't that my right to harras cute news girls?

She live a charmed life?
My kid used to grab our Rott's upper lip and try to pull it over her eyes.... Dog never even growled or walked away, just took the abuse with a look that said "I'm so over this poop!" She was a great dog.

My dog is some kind of mix between medium poodle (not the big one, not the toy, I don't know the name), bichon and maltese. He is 30 lbs and people give me dirty looks for having such a dangerous beast. Almost like if I was walking a Cane Corso or something
