Heat the water hotter...not much more that will help.

the water needs to be insane f-ing HOT like stovetop style, not luke warm bath.. the water should be hot enough that it's a real struggle just to keep your foot in it.. keep a pot on the stovetop and keep changing out/adding new hot water to the bucket that your foot's in every 10 or 15min, do it for an hour, you should be good.

take your foot out of the water and pee on it. ( your foot)
it will take the pain away almost instantly

Hi TheDudeCA. Be sure to keep the wound clean and sterilized as it can become easily infected. Also be sure your tetanus booster is up to date.

Thanks,
Eunice

I got nailed 2 weeks ago, really bad. Where did you get hit? Side of the foot? Shin? I was hit through the ball of my foot at a 30 degree angle and into my middle toe. Gnarly. Lots of swelling. Lots of bleeding. I went to urgent care. They took xrays to make sure there was no barb material left inside, which there wasn't. But there was a shitload of sand inside the wound, so they numbed me up and flushed it out for 15 minutes. Then lots of bleeding. It's a major puncture wound. Tonight was my first session since getting hit.

Good luck. You're probably through the worst of it by now.

Lulu was in serious pain for a good 2 hours on the deck... I kept a pot of boiling water going the whole time... after 2 hours nearly to the minute she said it felt better, got up changed out of her fullsuit and limped around that evening and the next day. Two days later she won a surf contest.

somehow on the top of my foot, right in the middle... so immediately I was a little worried that it hit a bunch of muscles on the top of my foot or something? I dno, I guess I feel like it's definitely not the worst place, convenient for different reasons really... definitely will be more careful next time. I can only hope it's getting better right now

what kind of expectations do you have?

i would expect it to stop hurting as soon as the pain goes away. damn dude, how many hours ago did you get stung? if the water is super hot you should be done w/this and drunk on Kahlua by now. aint sh!t else gonna happen. you're gonna have a little hole in your foot. kinda like a bee sting, but bigger.

must of hurt pretty bad, huh?

I guess I was just expecting some stiff and soreness tomorrow? It definitely hurt immediately, and then after I put it in hot water once and took it out for a minute it hurt gnarly. but now it seems to be going down.... still in the hot water though.... I mean I got outta the water a little after 8, and it's been in the water maybe since 9

Treated dozens of them.
Just a poke and no barb left behind? soak in as hot a water as you can tolerate. Epsoam salts will draw out the toxin too. Peroxide, betadine, bandage.
Poke the bone/possible detritus left in the wound? Go to the ER.
Poke the artery no stop bleeding? ER.
Gotta make sure no grimey bits left in the wound. Ever seen a barb up close? filthiest schit ever, algea, slime, toxin...
Always they ask for tetanus, don know why, but they do.

Build a fire, heat up stones, put this on it till it steams

Quote:

grind it between stones and and stuff it in the wound as hot as you can stand it.

It works.

Novacaine (if you have access, my primo is a dentist ) squirted in the wound also works well.

What ratfink said, clean it up good as soon as you can, the barbs are nasty slimy yucky.

The entry zone at one of our local breaks is known as "stingray alley", when the water temperature changes it looks like the bottom is paved with the phuckers.

I had a fever at night for a week after I got stung and the thing turned black and all the skin fell off.

But I don't do well with poison as a general rule.

Pissing on it will mildly relieve the pain but if you want real relief, be a MAN and take a sh1t on it.

I got hit a few weeks ago in exactly the same spot...my first sting. As you've already discovered, hot water is the only thing that helps. For me, the pain from the sting didn't seem as bad as the actual tail slap. It felt like I got hit by a hammer. If felt bruised (but didn't look it) for about ten days. In retrospect though, I'll take the top of the foot instead of all the other locations I've seen people get stung. Hope you're feeling better...

ya it's day two and the swelling has almost completely gone.... I kept my foot in ridiculously hot water for 2 1/2 hours straight (while I just kicked it on the erbb). I kept adding scolding water from a teapot into the main reservoir I had my foot in, but I guess at one point I poured the water too directly over my foot or something because I burnt myself once and have a little blister. my foot was red the entire next day from probably being a little burnt, too from being in such hot water, or maybe it was just the residual venom... definitely feel better about the whole thing, though, and am counting my blessings for getting away with this one easy this time
