Fark, haven't been surfing at all nor staying in shape. too busy with work related stuff. maybe had 3 sessions in last 3 months.
so, with these long periods of not surfing, do people actually keep higher volume/bigger recovery type boards in their quivers?
I have my trusty 5'9 GH fish but it still doesn't have the volume for me if I haven't surfed in a month. don't wanna use the log either. Just something to make it easier to paddle out and catch waves. any suggestions?

Dont go too big, fine way to strain your shoulders
My guess is a bigger short board, all the curve to keep you in synch with the wave, adequate foam to keep you flowing and catching waves

yup, agree 100%. too much foam and it forces one to paddle deeper pulling the shoulder bone out of the socket.
I think something like my narrow minded (being shaped) would work well. not too much foam. about 1.1 ft^3 eps so only maybe 19% more foam. otherwise I don't really have anything.
something like my old DK speed dialer would be amazing since it's still short but has beef under my chest for paddling. may have to hit him up for another board soon.
other options would be an oversized flyer type of board as you suggested. something still hp but stable for paddling.

I actually have something like this on order from Mike D @ Coil to help me out when my herniated disk/hip issues are flaring up, particularly in the winter months: Oversize widerboard (+2") with a little more volume, but with a round-tail to smooth out the big-board feeling, 5-fin option for versatility, but with "beachbreak" rails on it to keep it from feeling corky.

I know you don't like alternative boards but a semi-hpsb type shape might work better for you than a fish-based shape. Something like a CI Gravy or Lost Blunt or Roberts WD could give you the lengths you like plus the width to paddle in. You only need so much float to get in so I wouldn't go for a whole lot more thickeness than you normally like in your shortboards. The width and extra surface area should do it for you.
Just be careful with your duck dives on a wider board because those might do your shoulders in.

i keep being to damn optimistic and always end up getting rid of my bigger boards when i'm riding the puny ones. then when i have to recover i have to look for that recovery board. my logic for a recovery board is just like for my long period mush conds. about the same length as my good board but a bit wider and thicker.

this has been my recovery board lately:

still a bit low on volume but a whole lotta fun once up and riding. maybe a thicker one in same dims would work wonders. maybe 1" longer and a hair wider. 5'10x20.5x2.58 w/ GH's foiled out rails would work great.
I do have a narrow minded on the way so that would be cool. also, recovery would involve riding smaller days under shoulder high.
longer hpsb do catch waves easier if there is some push I've noticed, so somthing along the lines of a flyer type board would be rad.

this one looks good, how about a 5'9 - 5'11 Thumb or Stubbies, I thought extra foam is always better so that you can catch waves easier

unless the surf is good, my best recovery board is a longboard. after a session on that i'm usually feeling good to get back to my normal boards.

I seem to always feel like I need a recovery board......
Hence, my 6'2 Lost Plank has been most consistent 'Daily Driver' for the past year.
YES, it's absolutely too much board at times but I'll always take too much over too little any time.

“I recommend the 7’0 M-13. It will allow you to catch waves easily and forgiving enough to improve quickly on.”
Stollen comment from Al Merrick when asked about the best transition board.
I used one after injury. Noticed it was also popular with kids and got used for learners being pushed into waves.
It's basically a pointy nosed egg.
