Maldives on a budget?
      #2264831 - 03/12/12 07:08 PM

looking to spend a week or so on land in the maldives after a boat trip. Anyone have info on the cokes surf camp, or other land based operations that don't cost a fortune? Sounds like a hard place to figure it out as you go.....Thanks!

Tourism and surf resorts/boats are heavily regulated in the Maldives. It's really hard to do even a half-way feral surf trip there. Since the islands are so isolated, the only way into the Maldives without spending a lot of money is to go thru the capital, Male or airport next island over. You have to have legit permit to go almost everywhere from the airport or Male island.

From there, everything surf related is regulated. You might be able to go get a quick boat from the airport island to the small capital island of Male (barely 1/2 mile square with tall buildings crammed on it, looks really trippy), then scout around for some kind of cheap boat trip to one of the surf spots. But, I think it's so regulated and strict, that if the boat guy got caught, he'd have his fingers chopped off or some other Muslim extreme punishment.

The wealthy East Indians pretty much run all the resorts in the Maldives, and have lots of influence and power over the local less educated and poor Maldivians. Hence, there seems to be some kind of attempted coup or take-over there every few years or so, because of the inequities.

Good luck, but definately know what you're in for, before you just grab a plane ticket, with no accomodations. You might be able to negotiate a cheaper deal there with the resort reps at the airport, but it'd be a crap-shoot. A lotta hassle for a little savings.

There is nothing cheap about the maldives. I would suggest saving up for a decent trip.

on my visit to the maldives two years ago , we anchored up near the cokes camp......our crew men told us that the camp was not well recieved by the islanders. they brought in all their own workers and seemed to disrespect the local business people. we saw them taking short cuts across the reef with their rubber duckie(only boat they had) to get guests to the take off area at both cokes and chickens. I had them zoom right past me pretty close while i was diving along the reef wall one afternoon. we also saw them boarding and messing around with a grounded tour boat that was waiting to be pulled off the inner reef -- that Really stired up the island folks, police on their boat were called ! probably to save up your $$ and spend two weeks or more on a surf boat and maybe a couple of days are a land resort to decompress before the long flight home. a couple of aussies on our boat did tham and had a blast, they later told me on e mail....I would go back ther in a moment!

How was the wave at cokes? Worth staying there for a few days to a week? Crowded, or can a decent surfer get their fair share of waves? Already booked a 10 day boat trip, but I'm looking to hang around a bit longer, as I have the time. Thanks again for the info!

cokes & chickens are both fun waves, & if you're a reasonably competent surfer, you'll get your share of waves. i would recommend staying at the place that owns pasta point if you want to do the resort thing. when i was on a boat trip in the maldives in 2010, we motored past the break & there were only 4 guys on it...the resort owns the rights to pasta point, but doesn't book exclusively to surfers. so depending on when you go, you've got a reasonable chance of being one of the only other surfers in the place.
