Seems like a pretty natural response to frustration of an extremely driven individual who is attempting to cope with an inability to fulfill his goals: rookie of the year, event wins, and eventually world titles. Add in the fact that so much of contest surfing is out of one's control, that he's being tormented by Medina and JJ's nearly instant success, he's never performed this poorly in his long (weird to say) surfing career, and the external pressure on him to succeed is massive (dad, coaches, sponsors, media, fans, etc..) and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who wouldn't lash out aggressively in response to the repeated frustration he's faced.
I say it's good for him and I hope it leads to some constructive action on his part.
