The Brazilians, or a KA, in contrast, don't look like they are having fun. They look like little guys with chips on their shoulders competing with you, trying to put you in your place, because . . .. ?

Crazy how he combines such crazy innovative surfing with a loose, carefree style. It's the best surfing I have ever seen. I surfed with him at V-land once and it is 10x more crazy live.

For some reason, he's one of the only (if not the only) that I've picked up tips from by watching his videos. The subtleties of his movements to trim and milk speed quickly is just unreal. Plus, just an original style of surfing.

The new Xcel Drylock booties I got last winter are the best i've ever used, go on the small side.
He knows Emma Wood like the back of his hand and it's a tricky wave to start with. The other right he's launching at is mind blowing. I've seen that place DOH and barfing spit on the lefts, but those are the best rights I have ever seen out there.
He is better than anybody else on a surfboard right now, by a country mile.
Kelly Slater and John Florence are doing things on a board that Dane will never do. Dane doesn't charge big surf and doesn't win comps.
Having said that, Dane is still one of the best in the world.
agreed up to a point. Reynolds had an amazing heat last winter(?- 2 winters now) at macking Sunset. I think if he concentrated on that area he'd do fine.

here's the heat. I think JJ Florence went on to win this comp but I do believe this was Reynolds first time out at big Sunset and on a borrowed board no less.

Dane is a fckn beast. He has had some of the best tubes I have ever seen (think young guns 2 and that one clip on his site) but once it starts getting big (8 ft+) he's no longer a standout.

This. It gives me confidence that there are waves to ride well almost anywhere. I think it is a testament to his skill as well, because we only ever see the WT guys in perfect surf, or in contests (and how much do we bitch about crappy waves in contests and how awkward they look?)

Yeah I guess it's all relative. I have fun in a huge variety of conditions and I don't consider most of the waves he surfs, crap. He makes something out of nothing which is what it's all about for me.

I thought his waves in the Sunset event were some of the best, besides JJ's. It just doesn't seem like he WANTS it. If that was really his first time at big Sunset... he was what, 26? Then again, can you blame someone for not wanting to participate in the circus that is the North Shore in November/December if they don't have to?
I still say he blows doors on JJF in anything under DOH+. Reynolds has crazy, subtle positioning that makes his surfing so damn nice to watch, and power and style to burn. JJF is going to have to lose the skate style to match Dane's power, as much as I love the whole mellow arms skate thing. It's just a matter of using all of your body to get the torque going into a turn.

Whenever I want to find out what's new in the "most depressing and shittiest music" genre I checkout Marine Layer Productions. Dane's blog is like the Casey Kasem's Top 40 for that stuff.

Do you remember in The Search II, Curren surfing big north point and getting a 10 sec. barrel before the closeout lip pinned him? Or that left (I think it was macaronis?) Dane would kill that! I love his backside surfing.

Anyone know if that Japan footage surfaced in a full video? Dane slayed it apparently and according to an article JJF blew Danes mind and said he's the best surfer in the world.
Would love to see that vid.
