Hello Folks
Speed Dialer fins in NON Speed Dialer boards (anyone doing it)?
They have the same surface area of what I'm used to put I'm trying a set out in a pintail...Just waiting for the next swell.
Checking in. Cheers

Yes, but I still use the same speed dialer fin placement. You might do ok with a rail placement on the rears, but I'd be concerned with the lack of rake on the rears with a more centered placement.

I'm using them in an Ambrose Sputnik with acceptable results.

Makes sense
I have a feeling it might be touch stiff, and slower on the pivot...The fronts have more 'rake' so I moved the fronts and the backs up a solid notch in the box past the placement...

Ok cool...That does not surprise me since the tail widths and placement cannot be that far off. The Sputnik might be a little more forward (guessing knowing Shawn) but bot worlds apart.

Allan Gibbons made me two quad shortboards a few years ago, both designed to go with the speedialer fins. The main thing he said was that the boxes need to be close together. remember, you're splitting a keel with these, so it's a little different. As far as performance, very fast and very loose--not so unlike a Stretch F4. Notice Pavel's fin placement, close together.

Ridden them in a no bump quad fish as well as a Simmons style board and both worked really well.

I've played with them in all my wide tail boards, usually work really well.
Current favorite is in my Von Sol Shadow. Lately, I've been riding the speed dialers on my heal side and the von sol twin on my toe side.
I have an Allan Gibbons reflex that I was dying to get a set of future tab dialers for, but ended up getting the futures controllers and they feel very similar.

Aghh....Forgot that Toby talked about it being a 'split up keel' . Looks like we are getting a real swell in a few days, so I'm going to have to experiment a bit.

The speedialer fins are good for going down the line around sections, no good for turns.

Man, I did not find this to be true, as the speedialer fins go off the top like mad, both on shortboards designed for them and on quadfishes.

Hey Thanks 000 and all.
Honestly I did not expect you to respond to this thread, but then again I know 4 fins are you 'thing'.
Swell is coming up for the weekend so I share my results...

Fin position is more critical with Dialers than other fins, I think. I have the fronts in the middle of the boxes, and if I move up the rears to the front of their boxes(closest to the front fins), the amount of pivot is crazy. Too much, actually. I now have the back fins about 1/8th inch off the fronts of the boxes. Great combination of looseness and drive.

I used to push them into a small cluster, whcih seemed very loose, drivey and snappy. This thread is making me want to use them again!

If I am getting this strait, this fin is closer to a twin/keel then quads are? Both feeling wise and placement wise? Could be my missing key to liking quads, kind of intriguing and makes me want to try one.

Pavel would say that the speedialer setup maximizes the potential of having four fins on a surfboard. Rich was coming from the Lis fish tradition, so his thinking was to split the low aspect keel into two, making the front fin high aspect. The speedialer set up IS a version of a quad setup. Allan Gibbons will tell you that shortboards rip with this fin setup, provided that the boxes are set close together. Whew.

Thanks FB3 and all. I'm finding myself pushing the fins together before even taking it out
