The red boardshorts advertised here before Laird had a neoprene short hidden as under layer. Saw Xcel and other brands sell simple black neoprene short, which should prevent thigh skin rash, bu i never saw anyone using them. What do u think? Are they any good for rash pprotection? Would u wear just them or cover them with your usual boardshorts?

Not sure about neoprene. I started using lycra undershorts a few years ago on days I was going to be surfing a lot and they work great. Oneill Skins. None of the supposedly "no-rash" boardshorts work as well for me (Quick diamond dobby, Oneill Super Freak, etc). You can put these under any shorts and they become no-rash.

Back in the 80's Rip Curl and others made neoprene board shorts. They were kinda fashioned after canoe paddling shorts which were fashioned after bike shorts. But the board shorts took the seat padding out. They worked great. I used them all the time. Too fat to wear them now. I had a neon green pair and a black and electric blue pair. Well it was the 80's

the former has 3mm back and 0.5mm on other sides, while the latter is 1mm

I've had Ripcurls and the seams on my last pair ran the middle between the legs on both sides. That design makes for a rash you won't for get. If they haven't fixed that I would look at another brand.
I recently got a pair of Elephant Trunks and they're the best under suit shorts I've ever owned. All the seams are in the right place. The way they have integrated the neoprene works on several angles. They have a compression component because of how its used. The neo also keeps you from sliding around on your board if you are wearing stretchy trunks. By far the best and a USA product.

i went today to check the biggest sport store we have here (no surf at all though) I checked a running short, this http://www.decathlon.it/cosciale-deefuz-essential-id_3168455.html and I didnt like the seams then a swimmer short, but they seem to be too short to prevent rash. I didnt know Elephant, they seem pretty solid (and expensive as well)

I use the lycra unders.
the seam isn't really an issue since they should be form fitting and thus aren't really shifting around enough for that to cause an issue.
you have, however, touched on the main shortcoming of this approach....they tend to be a little on the short side which means you may not remain covered on the inner thigh when you are straddling a board.
they sell long legged lycra pants, if you were serious I bet you could cut them short and re-hem them.

used to have some o'neil's with lycra side panels and those black excel full neoprene paddle pants. In bigger surf there's no equal if you can deal with the ball hugging feel of a wetsuit. never understood why a surfer would want a pair of water flushing parachutes around his waist. might as well wear a kilt or something. The short red lifeguard shorts seemed more efficient and less like to get ripped off. That's why the QS scallops cleaned up following the sears primo label or aloha shirt print or rice bag surf jams era.
you'll never get a salt water enema bailing off the top in a pair of neoprenes. And no skinny okole bone pain or rash. that's why the distance canoe paddlers used them.

I was having problems with rashing, even with different brands of fancy high end shorts. Then, I tried my cycling, and dirt bike Lycra shorts under them, which helped, but they were not long enough, not comfortable, and the board shorts moved around too much. I read some reviews of the Elephant Trunks, ordered one, and am very pleased. And considering how much fancy board shorts cost, the Elephant Trunk price isn't too bad. I have surfed 8 hours in one day, with no rash, and the neoprene panels really keep board shorts from moving around. Definitely worth my it for me. My only complaint is a seam on the area butt that I think could be designed better -- sometimes it gets into a position where I sit on it wrong, and can become uncomfortable.

Based on this photo the Matuse's would probably give me a rash where the angular seam is on the front

have never worn neoprene shorts under trunks. I only get chafing with certain boardies. The stretchier ones work better for me.
I also don't wax all the way to the rails.

I still have some Local Motion ones that Sunny gave to me when I was a grom...
I dont run them they are really old but got them for nostalgia.
I use the Quiksilver Xplosiv boardshort. Best boardshort I ever used, crazy tech in them, expensive but they are crazy good. I use them to lift in when I do because of the inner short and its kinesiotape build. I also have some Oakley Blade boardies but the Quiks school them...
