I'm going to Central America for four months, then on to Samoa and Tonga via LAX. Reckon I'll need a bigger board (possibly more than one) after Costa Rica and Pananma - I'm thinking of extending my stop in LA to at least 24 hours.
Does anyone know of a decent surf shop near the airport? Please forgive my ignorance... I've never been to the West Coast of the states before so I have no idea of the local geography/how far the airport is from any surfing areas.

The airport is in Westchester, don't think they have any surfshops (could be wrong) I would think that Manhattan Beach will be the closest, a ton of different shops there...Maybe spider surfboards on Avalon and PCH (Or is it Artesia?)

Approx 10 minute drive south....I would suggest, when you get to LAX, find a yellowpages (Phonebook) for the South Bay, look for Surfshops in Manhattan Beach

If you are going to be in LA for 24 hours you are in luck there are plenty of shops right there. LAX actually abutts the beach. Get to the coast and go south and you come up on Manhattan Beach and all of those towns. There are tons of shops there- from Manhattan down to Redondo there are at least a dozen. Frohoff's, ET, the list goes on and on.

i'm not too familiar with the South Bay shops, but believe this is the 1st one you came to when driving south of LAX: http://www.spydersurf.net/dev/contact.html Never been in there myself, so don't know what kind of shop it is.
this shop is about a 10 to 15 minute drive North of LAX: http://www.zjboardinghouse.com/html/store_location_frameset.html
there's no shops East of LAX. For that matter, don't even attempt to drive east of LAX! That's the ghetto! ![[Eek!]](images/icons/shocked.gif) [ December 11, 2003, 10:09 AM: Message edited by: stu dog ]

Go to ET Surfboards, in Hermosa. A short distance from LAX, and a decent shop. At least, a long time ago when I lived there it was the "surfers" surf shop, whereas a lot of the ones closer to the beach were more about attire and beach blankets.

if you are going to stay 24 hours why not just order a custom and pick it up? When are you coming.

If I am not mistaken, LAX is in El Segundo. And Tyler surfboards is in El Segundo and they make good boards and have been around for a while. I think their shop is just off grand ave. One of the main streets in El Segundo. that would probably be the closest. Then of course all the shops in the south bay that have been mentioned already. I usually buy what I need from ET surf in Hermosa Beach.

one thing to look into, after reading about it on the bb - is some airlines aren't letting you take surfboards. you should check before you buy

hey just go south on sepulveda about 10 minutes and you'll come up across Surf Concepts on the right side. If you continue a little further south (5 minutes) you'll come up to Spyder on the right side as well. I personally like spyder boards, although the glassing is a little weak. I'm guessing a 6'8 will be around $400. good luck

i was gonna post that but you saved my the effort.
it's just after Marine street on sepulveda. They have CI, rusty, house boards, T&C and maybe some others aswell.
it's not exactly cheap, but it's not too overly expensive either. but besides, you'll be off on the money conversions and you won't know how much you're paying anyways.
