Longboard question?
      #508496 - 06/30/04 11:43 AM

In the 18 or so years I've been surfing, I've never owned anything over 7'0. Probably because there hasn't been much surf lately or because I can't find a good excuse to get another shortboard I've been considering getting a modern longboard. Any suggestions when it comes to dimensions? I'm 5'7, 150 pounds and fairly experienced surfer. Also, how short can you go on a longboard before it defeats the purpose of riding a longboard? Thanks in advance for the info and opininons.

I have been in the same situation as you. I am also an experienced shortboarder and 5'7". I weigh a little bit more, though. Being an experienced shortboarder any board that is bigger that 7'0" shaped like a longboard will let you catch the tiniest and mushiest of waves. I no nothing about longboard design, but I don't think you should worry about it too much, especially if you are getting one strictly for small surf. Just make sure you can carry it. I've tried many longboards and the bigger they are the wider they are. Being 5'7" my arms were too short to carry the board under my arm. I had a bitch of a time getting it to the beach and back. I now own a 7'10" tri fin longboard shape for those small days. Most longboarders will say that that is not a "real" longboard, but who cares what other people say or think. As long as you are effortlessly catching those ankle slappers and having fun. Good luck with your search.

In the strick sense of the word Longboard. You're talk 9'0"+
Anything shorter than that will have to go by another name. What you get will be determined by how you want it to ride.
Once you decide on that you'll be able to decide how long of a board you want.

I went through this a few years ago and got a narrow 9'2". and I was disappointed. Ultimately, I sold it.

If I had to do it over, I would have gone 10-10'6". and much wider (22"ish), something you really have to move around on - just can't turn and trim from the same position. Something that knee paddles easily. Just my $0.02, but if you want to experience a longboard, may as well try something that will give you your money's worth. Something that noserides well if you have the skill, something with only one fin...
