Well I made a visit to the most evil surfshop on the planet in Rockaway Beach New York and I see all of these shiny new Canyon surfboards! Some have beautiful colors with actual resin tints! I started looking at them and there was no shaper signature any where, then I saw the austrailian blank logo and after to or three boards I finally found the "made in china sticker" barely visible! I know we have gone through this topic before but it really was heartbreaking to see the Canyon logo being basterdized in such a way. I'm not pro suing but I really hope that Canyon is still registered to someone in Ca. who can sue the pants off these motherfuckers!

I don't think so this shop is the birthplace of satans spawn! They take every name that has lost it trademark and made it new again! Plastic Fantastic, Surfboards Austraila, Challanger all names of past glory taken over by these guys.

gotcha, that sounds lame.
everyone was pissed when Realm surfboards started showing up at Costco. People were ready to hang PatO, he got pissed then found out when he sold the license rights he lost control and they could do pretty much as they like.

Chinese companies have bought up a lot of American trademarks. See this: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/12/26/financial1038EST0037.DTL
Some people probably sold them the rights to Plastic Fantastic and other obsolete (worthless) but recognizable brand names for a few bucks.

Tom Sena, owner of the Rockaway Beach Surf Shop, owns the name along with Surfboards Australia, Plastic Fantastic, Surfers Alliance, and some other older brands. He has the boards made in China and sells them for a good profit to other shops and customers.

There are really great shapers out there that nobody has heard about because they've chosen to stay away from the limelight, then there are shapers who are in the limelight making big $$ and crappy boards. Try getting a good Merrick with clean lines on the east coast, nearly impossible, they come with huge chunky rails.

Sounds like he may have a case. I think if he can prove he was too stupid to enter into a legal contract, he might be able to get those rights back. Seems to me if he thought by selling the licensing rights he would maintain contol over the licensing rights, he might have a solid stupidity argument.

I'm a new surfer in NYC looking to get a quality 9'0 long board and I am having a real dilemma. There's a bunch of shops not too far from me, one place selling popular boards like Stewarts and Ricky Carrolls and another that sells Chinese made boards, i.e., - Surf Alliance, Surf Australia, Challenger.
The place selling the Chinese boards own the rights to them and they insist they are not "pop-outs." The other store got some stuff and I got my eye on a Ricky Carroll and the dudes in there tell me that the Chinese boards are "inferior." Side by side I can't see a bit off difference other than the logo. All the websites and message boards I've read cannot give me a fair comparison between them. The owners of the shops, of course, defend their own products. The main difference is a few hundred bucks and I'm serious about wanting to learn but first time out what should I get? Whatever I get I'm going to beat the hell out of. Some sites I've been to tell me that surfers go through boards on average every six months. I'm confused. Please provide me with clarity and an honest answer removed from what is "cool" which is not

Honestly, I know a few people that have them and they have lasted a few years of summer use. And Tom at RBSS and ABSS is right in that its not a moulded pop out but it is a generic shape made by a non surfer and is ruining the choice that surfers have of quality boards. Both these shops used to have some quality longboards in their shop now the choice is 90 percent china boards and the same thing is happening to the shortboard selection. If you live in New York you are losing your surfboard options. Buy a quality used board over the pop out you'll be much happier. I mean they are better than a surflab but that aint saing much.

word. The same thing is happening in NJ...these boards are everywhere and have seriously degraded the selection in most of the shops near me.

LESider, go out to Long Beach, NY or further east for shops that still deal in quality shaped boards. try unsOund in Long Beach. for a used board, you might check All Seasons Surf.
RBSS sells mostly china boards and regardless of quality arguments or arguments about sustaining the industry for the real shapers, china boards are one of the primary causes of lineup congestion through the summer. now any GQ reading yuppie from SoHo wanting to be edgy can buy a board and get in everyone's way. at least they're easy to spot in the lineup but slaloming all the buoys on the few good swells we get is pretty draining.
go with the Ricky Carroll or go out to unsOund and pick up a nice Timmy Patterson shape.
that said, anyone else hear about being able to buy coffins at Costco now? not the board carrying kind either but now you can walk away with a Realm popout and a box to lay in.

I got an Austrailian Chinese 9'0" and I'm very happy with it. I don't ride it that much since I only bring it out in the sh*t, so it didn't make sense for me to pay almost a grand for a quality longboard. I think I paid $400.
So I say go for it. You won't feel so bad when it gets dinged and all. Of course, a lot of people on this bb aren't going to agree with me since they make a living off this stuff. However, there's always the Surflab option, but I don't think there using the Crisco in China if that's what your looking for.

Thanks man. Appreciate the feedback. It's funny how capitalism takes the fun out of everything. I don't think the ocean cares what I surf on.

I'd suggest trying to find a used surfboard around someplace. E-bay, Craigslist, garage sales in surf towns, check all the shops. Just make sure it's watertight. As a relative beginner, it'll work just a well as a new one and you can make your own ugly fixes to your dings and after surfing a while and learning what you really want in a board, you can get a nice custom made exactly to your specifications.

That is probably 100% legal and actually pretty smart but with a product like surfboards it really pisses me off.
I wish I bought the Ugg boot brand name about 3 or 4 years ago.

Lot of hostility here and I gotta defend the guy to a certain extent... To his credit, Sena is a really GOOD guy who understands both the quality of his boards and the costs related to purchasing them. I went to pick up a new 8' Australia, and Tom gave it a thorough inspection before he handed it to me... noticed a minute/easily repairable ding and offered to knock a hundred bucks off or let me choose a more expensive board for the same price.
He's the first to tell you where his boards are made and the "made in china" sticker is pretty visible (not nearly as hidden as was suggested).
They're decent boards for beginners/intermediates for a good price from the only shop in the NYC area.
The guy has to make a living in a really difficult business and, as long as he's honest about his product, I got no beef w/his boards.
If you want a custom shaped board, then you can go elsewhere.
