Debate subject with my friend: Skimboarding vs. Surfing
      #616775 - 11/19/04 06:02 PM

My friend and I have a heated debate going on. I argue that surfing is much more difficult than skimboarding. No not the people you see gliding on the sand, actual wave riding skimboarding, which I'm assuming most of you have seen. We both skim and surf. He's starting to skim more than surf and I'm much less into skimming than the love I have for surfing.

My point: Skimboarding rides are much less longer in length than surfing in general, due to the fact that you're riding shorebreak.
Response: Even though the ride is shorter, the ride is more intense because of the pounding shorebreak:
My counterpoint: Anyone who surfs knows WHAT emotions are spewing through your body with maneuvers or not.

My point: You have NOWHERE near the amount of variety in board styles. Although there are fish and egg models for skimboards, there are no longboards, fin setups, etc.
Response: So.

His point: "skimming in my opinion takes a little more coordination and balance...no fins for stablility"
Response: If were talking difficulty than there's no comparison, paddling and endurance take much more training and fitness than having to walk up the beach after your rides all over. Overall there's more board to move.
Counterpoint: The beating you take in the shorebreak is just as bad, you have the threat of breaking your neck.
Other response: The chances of actually breaking your neck aren't that great if you know how to react and have any knowledge of the shorebreak.

ETC.

Open for discussion.

I would bet that anyone that can skimboard on a wave can also surf.

However, not everyone that surfs can skimboard.

Ergo, skimboarding on a wave is harder than surfing a wave. Besides, you can't use a log as crutch when your skimboarding.

skimboarding's for when the waves suck.
Surfing didn't come from skimboarding.
Skimboarding came from surfing.

Skimboarding is pretty radical done right but to me it is child's play... get off the fricken sand and paddle out already.

It's hard to say that one is better than the other. It's whatever you like better.

I've been skimboarding for over 10 years and when i bought my first shortboard a year ago, it seemed like child's play. I've never met a decent skimboarder that wasn't a better than average surfer.

SCR, when we're those pics taken? I skimmed the wedge on a little smaller day 2 years ago. That wave is amazing.

2-3 years ago, I'm not really sure. That's just an average day though. The boogers were taking the larger sets.

there are different aspects of difficulty involved in skimming and surfing. i broke my ankle skimming a few years ago, i havent done that surfing. but i still thinking overall that surfing is harder. guys like bill bryan though, the things he does on a skimboard look harder than anything ive seen done on a surfboard.

Bill Bryan is nuts. He is the subject of 4 of the 5 skim photos. But the other guys do almost equally nutty stuff. Here's a young kid named Jake Stinette.
