stubster - hows the pickle working out for you so far with the different fins setups?
I've had the board out a handful of times a couple of weeks ago when we had some swell activity, in everything from waist to HH conditions. Most of the sessions were trying to find a fin combo that would work for me. Some were way too squirrelly and beyond skatey.
The first session was the adjustment session. I was coming off riding a 9'6" longboard due to the lack of swell previously. So when I got on this 6' stubby, it felt small and the wrong fin combo made it feel really out of control.
After swapping out lots of fins, the best combo for me are VFT1 512s with 375 rears as a quad. I tried the setup with 340 rears, which gave it a little more looseness; probably good for up to chest high. It felt a little too loose on HH waves. Once I switched out the rears to 375s, it felt really good. If I want to stiffen it up a little more, then I can go with 400 rears.
The Rainbow Canard cutaway (speed dialers) felt really good also, but the 512s seem to have a little more drive as well as being able to fine-tune it more with 340, 375, 400 rears.
The board paddles really well, like a board of a much bigger size. Sometimes I have a difficult time trying shove the stubby under the wave when trying to duck dive since it's way more buoyant than you would imagine. It paddles into waves easily, it's very stable upon takeoff, super responsive, like a waveskate. It surfs backside extremely well. The board is so light, you can just easily toss it around if you want. The board has tons of drive; unlike a waveskate or a biscuit where you need a little punch behind the waves to get them going.
I went back to longboarding again since I picked up a custom 9'3" high performance longboard the other week and the waves have become small once again. Hopefully I'll have the pickle back out this weekend. There should be some swell activity coming.
It's a really great board. It'll be one of my main boards in rotation this summer. Super stoked the way it rides and performs.
