Does it seem like the pool of warm water is setting up more in the Central Pacific than the Eastern Pacific?
Yes. This phenomenon was first published on in 2005 in response to the 2004 El Niņo, which was called the "dateline" El Niņo. Temperatures in the Eastern Pacific were actually cooler than normal, despite warm water in the Central Tropical Pacific, which is not something that is happeneing with this current El Niņo.
Ashok et al., a group from JAMSTEC in Japan, published a detailed statistical analysis of this phenomenon in 2007, where they dubbed it "Modoki", a descriptor which had been used in the Japanese media during the 2004 El Niņo in order to describe the atypical changes in local climate, different from the effects of an El Niņo proper. The time scale, evolution and frequency of Modoki are also very different than the traditional El Niņo. They feature much more strongly in summer/fall than winter.
