The tradewind strength has plummeted and now the dynamical models all want a sharp break for warm, stronger El Niņo conditions. SOI is slightly positive today, but, as the monthly average indicates, the overall trend is still negative.
This figure shows the weakened trades:
We remain in moderate El Niņo conditions (temps about a degree above normal in the central and Eastern tropical Pacific). With the winds weakened, things are much more favorable for some intensification, which we are already seeing in the central Pacific.
