Why all the fuss over Dane riding and ripping on a Roberts, but it wasn't a big deal when Kelly won his 7th world title almost exclusively riding a Simon Anderson?
Kelly has a deal with al most likely. Does he always have the CI logo on his boards? I seem to remember when some of his boards got stolen he said they were distinctive because they didn't have the logo. Just the al merrick name on them.
Burton owning CI has changed the way their contracts work I'm sure. There have been pro skateboarders who get kicked off a team for getting a shot wearing the wrong shirt. It's not the riding another label (board) that's a problem. It's the riding another label in a magazine. Dane can surf whatever board he wants as long as no one's taking pictures.
I'm interested in this story mostly because it is dane. If he's as carefree as the media thinks he is then why would he care to stay on CI? They must be paying him a lot to stick around. Seems like he just wants to have fun and not worry about all this stuff.
Here is the thing. The contract was between Dane and Burton. If Dane did not follow his terms of the contract, he should either be released, or sued for breach. That would be the "right" thing to do.
But you know what? They'd never ***** do that. They need Dane. Really ***** bad.
I have a big problem with what Burton did after the fact. Trying to pass someone else's shape off as your own is entirely fucked.

So Danes been seen ripping it up on a little stubby wide real basic design 5-7 1 /2 19 1/2 2 3/8 flyer type thingy throughout trestles. Here’s the skinny ! We shaped a short stubby square tail for Dane to ride in Mexico on his quiksilver photo trip with Kelly and Julian about two weeks ago .It was nicknamed Dumpster Diver because we literally had to wrestle the garbage man for the old yellow square block of eps foam that we were about to toss. This board was shaped out of that raw blank of foam by hand. The machine was down that day so or we would of cut a stubby version of the flyer on it to achieve basically the same concept but had no choice but to do it this way.
Honestly, that right there is pure bullshit. If Burton was pissed about the breach of contract, they should drop Dane, rather than going on an all out attack against some guy who is working hard to put food on the table. And the fucked thing is the example I listed is just the begining of CI's bullshit with this issue.
i'm sure Burton is all for their 2nd best rider to secretly ride other shaper's boards. just as long as it doesn't get any press cause that would expose them to the world that the emperor has no pants.
You know what my boss would do if I were doing something he didnt like?
Fire me.
