Risk of injury was 2.4 (95% confidence interval, 1.5–3.9) times greater when surfing in waves overhead or bigger relative to smaller waves and 2.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.3–5.2) times greater when surfing over a rock or reef bottom relative to a sandy bottom.
Conclusion: There were 13 acute surfing injuries per 1000 hours of competitive surfing. The risk of injury was more than doubled when surfing in large waves or over a hard seafloor.

Sorry to burst yer bubbles and all...
I call BS. This is kinda like the old "surfing burns 115 calories per hour" thing. Now that you have guys blowing out tails and boosting 10 foot airs...
Anyways, sandy, hollow beachbreak barrels by far are the most dangerous. Even the chest high stuff. So playful and fun til you're getting sucked over into a 2ft of water pile driver. Had a bad one last year and I'm lucky I wasn't paralyzed.
From what I understand, Puerto is known for leaving allota folks in wheelchairs?
