First a bit about myself... A surfer to the bone. When asked What do you do and How do you spend your vacations my answer has been the same for years. I surf. Since 12 yrs old I've spent virtually any extra dough i've had on surf exploration covering Indo, all of Mexico, Hawaii, Samoa and even some east coast hurricane travel. So Im trying to express...I am Surf and I hope you are too. You'll appreciate this story more if you are... Phone rings... two friends say swamis is going off using the words picture perfect. Rarely do I surf Swamis but with news like that and three hours before having to pick up my 9 and 11 yr old I quickly threw board and suit in truck and headed that way. The setting is a sunny day with five foot plus clean swamis line up and the crowd growing by the minute. Most waves had multiple riders atleast at the beginning. I paddled my 6'1'' ARAKAWA board out said Hi to couple people and within 15 minutes was riding my first wave. I was lucky because as many surfers were peeking their heads over to attempt a drop in, none of them did and I got the whole wave to myself...all the way in. Stoked, I paddled right back out for #2. Ten mins or so later here comes #2. A nice size wave Lotsa people paddling for it and there is one guy paddling deeper than me. I spotted him and thought possibly he's paddling very casually, may not catch it, I'm going. With three or four people dropping in front of me I went. Just as starting my bottom turn I felt the Grab. Surfer behind me grabs my waist and pulls me down... A great move and laughable I'd say. Underwater this guy will not let go of me and I think Whoa this guys got a good grip on me...he's either a friend or a strong guy and i thought of being ready to get punched in the face as I surfaced. Upon reaching above water I spot the guy I SNAKED. There... I said it...I snaked him as four others snaked me! Oh well Honestly I was ready to say "My Bad...Good Grab!" Young guy immediately starts ranting that I am a kook for surfing with a leash and a buncha "go Homes" then he with a fist punches out my fin tilting it unsurfably. His board was floating into beach and I said I'll see you there. I had hoped to reach the beach before him to inflict some damage to his board but you know those inside lulls at swamis. we both reached the beach at the same time. On beach I am noticing this guys size. Hes younger and prob around 6'1'' maybe four inches taller than me and a bit thicker and looks like he'd have a good reach on me... I was constantly being aproached by him on the high side of the beach and i thought for sure a couple times I was about to be swung on. Lotsa words fly...you can imagine. Three of his derelict looking friends were on beach witnessing the verbage and aggressive behavior. One friend with a camouflage beanie says "Was that you that dropped in on him? That's Fu#@ed up get out of here go home kook" to which I replied "FU#@ you kooks Do I look like im from Arizona?" Anyways basically seemed like I had to go. Guys bigger than me, has friends and my board has a broken fin. Fu#@ I just got punked right? gotta go right? I take my sorry ass up the stairs and let me tell you...this sh#t was eating at me. I load up my truck with board remove wetsuit and start thinking of what can I do. My real desire was to make sure that he and I are both fixing boards tomorrow. Shorts on Flip flops on and I took off my Oside shirt not wanting to bring cities into what may happen when I go Back down there. I put my ID in my pocket just in case this goes bad. I walk down those long stairs eyes peeling everywhere for this guy. Maybe his board will float in I'll stomp it or something...I really don't know what I am about to do. On the beach I stand with my back against the cliff. Two cute girls filming on beach/cliff spot that I am the guy who almost had a fight a few mins ago. Those friends of his spot me and talk amongst themselves yet don't approach. I wait and wait. what did I expect you wonder? Well I hoped to ding his board. I expected a quick beat down from him but I knew I'd just do my best. I have some experience lets say. And I can run very fast! I wait and wait. Upon realizing i had only about 45 mins until picking up kids from school and this guy is not to be spotted it was just about time for me to go. Just then I took a step left towards stairs and Guess who's exiting the water and walking right toward me. He spotted me on beach and now I had better say something. "what the fu#@ do you want" he says approaching me with fist clenched and trying constantly to take the high side of beach. Again looks like I'm about to get swung on but my eyes dont come off his fist and i continue backing up. I say "hey I came down to find out your name?" He says "why you got the cops up there waiting for me?" "NO I just wanna find out who you are. I already think youre an as@hole but maybe we've got mutual friends...I ll ask what kind of asshole you are?" "My name is Jon@thon.. what you wanna do about it?" "What I want to do is ding that board..." He then sets it on beach behind him rocker down and says "well come get it!" as he starts backing me down with clenched fist. I think he said "I was a football player" What a strange thing to say i thought. Either way he's backing me up and taunting me with fist. Again I was thinking this may not be my day... but i noticed we were both about twenty feet from his board and arguing some bullsh@t. I casually lean down pick up a medium rock and high lob it in the air towards his board. Oh the moment of silence as we both watched this rainbow throw land nicely to dink his board. "PERFECT!" I shout as he returned to his board to check it. "My board you mother fu#@er" as he sprints directly at me picking up a good size rock and zeroing it in on me. My eyes had to be as big as can be cuz I did not want to get hit by that thing. He had his arm cocked back for like three or four seconds thinking about hitting me with it. I juked side to side and wondered if I should close the gap between us or go further away. This is gonna be stitches if it lands i Thought. After not throwing the rock for like four seconds i thought maybe this guys not gonna throw it and i start to turn to trot away, head turned not taking my eyes off him or that rock in his hand, but again he sprints right at me rock cocked behind his head. My trot slows as I turn sharply into him and execute a perfect double leg take down. (at this time the impact of me shooting in on his legs sent my sunglasses shooting over my head thus scratching my forehead) This take down went perfect as he was on the beach he figited around and with his arm up in the air gave me a perfect rear choke hold with his head and arm squeezed so tightly. His feet were digging into the sand as i effortlessly cinched tighter and tighter stepping back everytime his feet would dig. "Let go" he said "let Go"again "LET GO..." I cinched as tight as possible then dropped him and stepped away. Talk about the face of regret. He changed his tune real quick. "cmon Man this is Gay" he says "we're being dumb. cmon you got a cut on your head. lets go wash that thing off" hand extended as if to shake? I didnt feel a cut on my head and was quite pumped you can imagine. That's when i spotted that nice new board lying rocker down on beach. While i was choke holding the guy i looked toward his friends and they weren't doing a thing. I now did a sprint of my own...I ran as that guy just stood there and watched. B-Lining to the board i jumped high in the air and landed double heals on board. In fact that made me fall so I got up gave a few more stomps then hit board on jagged cliff edges then dropped it and said "There you go mother fu#@er!" The guy starts a buncha fu#@ offs and i told him dont say one more thing. He did so I casually went right up to him took his board from him and said "This is mine now..." and walked off. I hear this guy saying "cmon...its not even my board...hey cmon" What a change of tune! "Then you've got some explaining to do..." I walked up stairs couldnt believe this guy wasnt even following me. By the top of stairs i realize I wouldnt want to be thought of as a thief and what better way for this guy to remember today. So at top of stairs I left Jonathons board mounted diagonally to the STAY OFF CLIFF sign. I thgen proceeded across parking lot where i saw a few guys had followed and were yelling some stuff yet wouldn't approach...cuz i kicked off those flip flops in the grass and offered Jonathan another chance. As I drove away I noticed Jonathan leaning towards street moving his lips as if to make it known he was trying to take down my lic plate. I washed up my head, got the skin out of the nose piece of sunglasses. (Don't clash with sunglasses on) Hours later my surfing friends who saw nothing asked me "dude where'd you go? The waves getting better" I told them the story and they said there were cops at parking lot listening to some story. I asked did they write things down? and they said no. I've gotten miles out of this story. all the friends were very impressed. and I know justice was served. Nobody was hurt and my board was fixed by 9am the next morning and the scratch on my head healed nicely...Yet J's board still prob doesnt float! Feel free to comment to what you just heard here Remember this guy held me underwater broke my fin off then chased me with a rock on beach... My opinion Justice served Post Extras
