Imagine a split fin board as you suggest with the rear fin at 8 3/4" which is the twinzer main fin placement.
A quad with its rear fin at that placement would be a challenge to ride.
This is what you are speaking of. Just stating - no grumpy. 
Mine were called rear set Twins in the 80's Its based on what works best... For 41 years. Not just mine.
