i'd just like to add something that no one else has...
You guys are all talking about the water hitting the fins from the rail inward, toward the center.
In reality, the force of the wave is moving upwards and outward. That comes from the center of the board out - the board is in fact clinging to the face of the wave. The outside of the rail has an impact, no doubt, especially as velocity increases. But, in general the water will be moving from center out to the rail as it flows up the face of the wave and forms the curl....
hence bonzer theory and all that
