When Wil Jobson was shaping here in Santa Cruz a few years back I got to spend some time with him in the shaping room. On high performance shapes he would run a chime starting a few inches from the nose tip along the rail at just past the apex of the nose rocker. When I asked him about it he claimed that it gave the board better lift off the nose along with giving it better transition off the nose.
