hence the term tri-PLANE, having 3 different planing surfaces. You could say it was a mellow chined bottom.

That's what I thought too
maybe this is correct, i'm recollecting from gromhood! i think the rails were similar to what was used on the (now called) black beauty boards. not a super hard chine, though. my friend from jr. high/high school still has this board - is repairing it now. i'll see it soon.
