Yah it scares me too that one of the best goes down (again) at Mavericks. Just goes to show that Mav's is one of most brutal and consequential waves in the world. With all the close-calls out there over the years, I'm really surprised more haven't died. Some waves (at least when it's 50' on the face) aren't meant to be ridden. Is it really worth the risk if you have a family with kids?
I recall when my best surfing homie had a kid. He changed his surfing habits quickly. We could ALWAYS depend on each other in big swell and neither of us would think twice about finding a spot that looked 'smaller' But since his son was born, it all changed in heartbeat. We showed up at one particular spot. To this day it was still the best I've ever seen it. One guy out and 12' solid and pure glass point break. He wouldn't do it. Wouldn't paddle out because he was a bit out of shape (first big swell of the year that season) and then he told me 'big waves aren't worth it to me now that i have **** in my life'. I couldn't believe it. I ended up paddling myself as he and his wife watched from the cliffs. I was happy (for him) but bummed at the same time. I knew I had lost a good surfing partner and one that I could always rely on to watch each others back out there.
