It's easy enough to sink some plugs and play around with it.
I'm thinking, though, that the more important aspect (than overlap) is the relationship of the fins' leading edges to the flow. Which, back there, is more diagonal to the stringer than parallel, suggesting that the ideal setup is in having the leading edges meet the flow more or less simultaneously- if that makes sense.
So the canard is less about "cleaning up" the flow than it is about catching some of the wash and directing it back. In effect adding more fin base without compromising rotation.
Like I said, above, I want to try that board with more upright, narrower-based main fins, and a little bit bigger and deeper canards..when i get around to it.
