I just did a sprint tri last summer (and got first in my age group) on a fixed gear, a borrowed sleeveless wetsuit (water was 49) and pretty much nothing else. I'm doing the olympic length one this year.
I don't think sprint or olympic length have anything at all to do with ironman tri's. Yikes.
As far as bikes go, the components on a cheap bike will fall apart on you within 6 months. I'd get a bike like Norm is suggesting and find one used for under $1,000.
You can read all about all of this, ad nauseam, on triathlon forums, but I swear, triathletes must be THE most gear/equipment happy people on earth.
Gracepark, the sprint is MINOR; do it with whatever you have, pretty much.
Like I said, I have the run down. I'm 99% the swim won't be a problem for me (I'm going to give it a whirl this weekend when my wetsuit gets here).
The two caveats is the bike ride and putting it all together (obviously ). I haven't ridden a bike in over 4 years (when I lived closer to work I road a cheapo sports chalet mountain bike back and forth from work every day - ~ 16 miles or so round trip). I've never ridden a road bike or a tri bike or anything that isn't a BMX or a Mountain Bike in my life. So the biking part intimidates me and the only reason I'm not doing a sprint this weekend is because I don't want to do it on my wife's beach cruiser/comfort bike.
