I was sitting on the inside of the pack and a huge set popped up and swung wide around the reef and caught me right in the impact zone. The first wave blew me down and bounced me off the bottom. It was late afternoon and the water was dark, almost zero visability and I got disoreinted and couldn't figure out which was was up for a bit. I barely made it to the surface in time for about one breath before getting slammed by the second wave of the set and held under in the pitch black again. Finally popped up about a hundred yards inside almost in the shorebreak and was able to swim in and crawl up onto the beach. That was a beating that has always stuck in my mind.
