if you're not pumping and pressing on the thruster w/ ur hind leg, it'll stall and won't move. It needs to go rail to rail to get speed. I switched from quad to thruster on my nano and I felt the same slow dragging kelp thing until I got all aggro and starting pressing with my hind leg and pumping and chit. Got a frontside fin waft on my last wave which is unheard of for me. Maybe on 3 in my entire life. the quad I could just stand there and pressure slightly the inside rail and it'd just go.
